WEB Catcher prospect Romo gets the call as Rox part ways with Díaz

Romo, Rockies' No. 9 prospect, called up from Triple-A

The Colorado Rockies have called up catcher Drew Romo from Triple-A Albuquerque, the team announced Friday. Romo, the Rockies' No. 9 prospect and a 2020 first-round draft pick, will take the place of Elías Díaz, who was released by the team.

Romo, a switch-hitter, has been one of the best hitting catchers in the minors this season. He is batting .333 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs in 75 games at Triple-A. He also has a .990 OPS and an on-base percentage of .444.

Díaz released after nearly five years with Rockies

Díaz, 30, has been a fixture in the Rockies' lineup for nearly five years. He was acquired by the team from the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018 and has been the team's primary catcher ever since.

Díaz is a solid defensive catcher with a strong arm. He has also been a productive hitter, batting .270 with 55 home runs and 240 RBIs in 491 games with the Rockies.

Rockies head into final quarter with different roster

The Rockies are entering the final quarter of the season with a much different roster than they had at the beginning of the year. The team has traded away several key players, including shortstop Trevor Story, outfielder Kris Bryant, and relief pitcher Daniel Bard.

The Rockies are now in a rebuilding mode and are hoping that Romo can be a part of their future. Romo is a talented young player with a lot of potential. He has the potential to be a very good hitter and a solid defensive catcher.
