Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Pitches Balanced Way To Reduce Crime

Mayor Pitches Balanced Plan

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson took office Monday immediately vowing to tackle one of the city's most pressing issues: rising crime rates.

Johnson won Chicago's tight mayoral race last year against tough-on-crime candidate Paul Vallas with the message that he would pursue a more balanced approach to public safety.

On Monday, Johnson unveiled his plan, which includes increased funding for police and community programs and reforms to the criminal justice system.

Chicago Mayor-Elect on Wednesday Attempted to Dispel Contentious Relationship

Days before the Democratic National Convention (DNC), legal groups fired off a letter to the mayor and top cop raising alarms about possible police abuse.

The letter was signed by 65 groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Chicago Urban League.

The groups cited a recent report by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) that found that complaints against officers had increased by 20% in the past year.

The mayor-elect said he was committed to working with the CPD to address the concerns raised in the letter.
